Our team is working to develop cytotoxic drugs that are targeted for delivery to the tumor site and are not distributed to normal tissue. Such medication is more effective (since it stays longer in circulation) and safer for the patient.
Cytotoxic drugs that could be toxic to normal tissues are encapsulated in nanoscale carriers of biodegradable or biocompatible polymers or lipids. Because of encapsulation, the drug stays longer in circulation than it otherwise would, and it then accumulates in tumors, to the exclusion largely, of normal tissue, increasing the efficiency and the safety of the drug. It also avoids excipients that lead to safety warnings in existing products.
The encapsulation process developed by us offers spontaneous high degree of encapsulation of the drug. The drug has been made user friendly. Special infusion sets, in line filters, aseptic mixing procedures while administering the drug to the patient as is the case with current products, may not be required for this delivery system.
Our nanoemulsion technology is at preclinical stage, with demonstrated proof of concept.
